A New Typology of TV Format : An Aspect of the Relationship among Story, Play and Media The purpose of this dissertation is to suggest a new useful typology for TV format creation and interpretation in an aspect of universal cultural factors composing TV format. The study inspects the effectiveness of previous typology and definition of the non-scripted TV format especially. It tries to define the difference of TV format and TV program consistently causing confusion. A TV program is normally designed in the limitation of space and time related in broadcast coverage and programming. Otherwise a TV format emphasizes universal events of human affairs and international codes for targeting global audiences. Therefor the study focuses that a TV format uses universal cultural factors actively for global consuming. While the previous typology has focused on the economical and industrial use, a new typology of the study is useful to interpretate and create formats. In this flow, universal cultural factors organizing TV formats are the story, the play and the media. The story is considered the key elements of a scripted format like a soap opera. But the study identifies that the non-scripted format such as the survival, the audition and the game show uses storytelling very broadly. It classifies four general types of stories with Orson Scott Card's M.I.C.E. quotient which means Milieu, Idea, Character and Event. The play is the universal culture phenomenon existing anywhere. After TV has been on the living room, the play is easily found on the entertainment TV format like a game show including diverse gaming elements. When comparing the TV format and the characteristic of play, the study finds that they share the same cultural structure reproducing the meaning. In addition, the study adopts the types of play by Roger Caillois like agon, alea mimicry, Ilinx for formalization. Media mediates TV format texts. Media is substance of expression and itself can be a main concept of format. Providing digital editors provokes the change of story aspect. Development of camera technology makes the new environment of play and new storytelling. A smartphone and the development of network make the users gather in the virtual space as a platform not in the physical space where TV is placed. The study formalizes the format as a media platform and media technology through the consideration of relationship between formats and media development. The story, the play and the media have the structural relationships producing the mutual meaning. Therefore the study classifies the types according to their status like how it occupies in the format. As a result, a new typology can suggest clearly what the audience prefers. Furthermore the study finds the matches among types of format text and it has strength to categorize all types of formats without exception. It also finds the actual concept of individual TV format which the previous typology has lost before. Actually it tries to make new interpretation about the character, the event, the stage, the plot and the viewpoint. It suggests how to make a concept of the character, how to use the stage equipment, how to use audience, how to apply media specifically. Finally It suggests the format creation system including interpretation based on the mutual relationship and hierarchical classification. To sum up, the study interpretates TV format text based on the universal cultural factor through a new typology, which makes to create TV format. It tries to change viewpoint of the economical and industrial TV formats focusing on the specific type and production to the viewpoint of cultural contents with analytical value. Therefore this study expects the positive impact on TV format production as well as the other relating studies and discourses.
